EU car registrations fall a fifth straight month

New car registrations in the European Union fell in January, marking the fifth month of consecutive decline, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association said Friday.

The association, known as ACEA, said new car registrations–which closely track new-vehicle sales–fell by 4.6% to 1.2 million vehicles as demand dropped across almost the
entire union.

However, this still represents the second�$B!>�(Bhighest January volume on record since 2009, ACEA said.

Spain and Italy posted the strongest declines, with new registrations falling 8% and 7.5%, respectively.

Registrations fell 1.6% in the U.K. and 1.4% in Germany, the association said
